A big bright billowing green flag
Based on what I'm hearing from people (hearsay) and rooting around in job postings (more objective research)...
The engineers most in demand at the moment both:
(a) have strong engineering foundations
and
(b) are fluent with AI coding agents.
I do not see evidence that ANY companies are looking for engineers who lack (a). Literally, every single company wants to ONLY hire engineers with strong engineering foundations, as far as I have found. Tell me if you find an exception; it's clearly rare.
And while (b) is not often a hard requirement...
It's also something many companies consider important. If you know how to use AI to create quality software, they see that as a big bright billowing green flag.
Which makes it super smart to learn well. AI coding skills give you a huge advantage over the flood of over applicants.
You can verify this yourself. If you've filled out your Linkedin profile (which gives Linkedin data on your skillset), then on https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/ you will find a section for job listings that Linkedin thinks fit you. Read the 'About the job' section on several of them (you'll have to click the almost-invisible 'more' link to see the full thing). You'll see many of them want AI coding skills ("genAI" and "generative AI" are common keywords), and all of them want engineering expertise.
If you are the kind of engineer who has read this far, you will not be left behind. If you have been worried, let me encourage you to be hopeful; there's a lot of opportunity right now, and just the fact you are reading this means you are in a good position to benefit from it.
But you must take the right action. And you might have more fun, and get better results faster, if you focus on filling in any gaps you have in both (a) and (b).
Plus some other things that will help even more, like your writing and communication skills.
All of which Boosted Code teaches you. In fact, the biggest challenge will be deciding where to start in the hyooge curriculum.
If you are in Boosted Code, go through the 'Welcome' module first, if you have not already. That helps you know how to proceed.
